Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

So, I saw the new B+ Pi, and thought it would be a great time to replace the dead netbook that used to run my emoncms database.  Booted Noobs on it, it works great.

Of course, the precompiled SD and HD emoncms images don't boot for me though.  Has anyone else got a B+, or an idea on how to make it work?  Guess I could use the usual Noobs boot and just install Emoncms like I did on the Ubuntu Netbook, but I was wondering if there's a better way; I was running Ubuntu off the SD card on the netbook, and it toasted the SD card after a year of use; I imagine the Pi will do the same thing if I don't use an actual hard drive.

Yes! great, it looks nice doesnt it! we just got one today, going to build the next image with the latest raspbian which I think has the needed drivers etc for the new b+ should be up in the next week.

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

I've uploaded a new image using the latest rasbian + emonhub + low write emoncms it can be found here: http://files.openenergymonitor.org/emonSD-24-07-14.img.zip

With documentation here:

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi, I'm fairly new to this forum and to the whole Openenergymonitor thing so please regard anything I offer with a huge grain of salt!

Finally got it to boot with http://emoncms.org/site/docs/raspberrypihdd after a bit of dicking about by downloading latest version of Raspbian, creating install on a microsd card, editing the cmdline.txt file to point to the usb hard drive dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/sda2 rootfst$ and the config.txt file with safe_mode_gpio=4 to increase usb voltage to enable booting from external hd without a powered usb hub.

Voila! it works!

http://www.chokoparty.info:8088/emoncms/garylovesbeer

Also uploading to

http://pvoutput.org/list.jsp?id=29487&sid=30754

Any suggestions regarding the editing of the two txt files would be appreciated.

Now to get the graphs working when viewed from outside the local network.

Thanks for all the help in these fora. It has been invaluable in setting up a very useful tool.

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi TrystanLea
excuse the silly question, and my bad English.

the file "emonSD-24-07-14.img.zip" may also be used by the new raspberyB + and emonTX, correct?

Regards

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi serbat

Yes, that image was built on the latest Raspbian release dated 20/06/2014 which is the deciding factor.

The B+ is not intended to be run on raspbian versions prior to that. With the latest Raspbian version you should be able to run all Pi software that would run on the B version, including all the OEM project stuff.

Hi Paul
Ok, then try to mount the image and try it
Thanks again for your reply

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

I can confirm the new image works well with the B+. I'm running the latest image (28th) on B+ at the moment

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi  glyn.hudson
Thanks for your response, (28th) you mean this file?
"" emonSD-28-07-14.img.zip ""

I'm currently using this file, installed on HDD
"" 02.23.2014-emoncms_raspberrypi_hdd_stack.zip ""

The file "" emonSD-28-07-14.img.zip "" allows you to use a HDD as the one I am using now?

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hello everyone

Sorry, I mounted the image emonSD-28-07-14.img.zip, but nothing works lights up only the red led and nothing else.

Sorry for the question but I just have to upload the image emonSD-28-07-14.img.zip in the micro sd card and empty enough.

Sorry but I can hardly understand English.

*****************************************************************************************

I managed (by force to re-read the guide) to access the home page emonmcs, good.

now I go to bed, tomorrow I try to configure the dashboard ..... thank you all.

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

I do not understand now what I need to change the file

  --   nano /etc/emonhub/emonhub.conf   --

pb66's picture

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

emonhub.conf is where you enter your emoncms apikeys and rfm2pi settings (eg frequency)

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Yes I mean emonSD-28-07-14.img.zip, info and download link can be found https://github.com/emoncms/emoncms/tree/bufferedwrite

For setup guide inclusing how to edit emonhub.conf see: https://github.com/emoncms/emoncms/blob/bufferedwrite/docs/setup.md

This is due to become our default raspberry pi image soon.

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Thanks guys - I got the emonSD-28-07-25.img image to boot, and even set up emoncms.  I'm running a custom Arduino on the USB port to read the CT's, and I think I can just edit the emonhub.conf as per

http://openenergymonitor.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/oem-gateway-serial-port-...

to get the data in to emoncms.  I used to use that Python script, but it was very unreliable.

However, I'm not able to get the network up and running, either via wired or USB WIFI.  Both worked fine via Raspian.  Am I missing something?  I've been running rpi-rw at each boot, but the best I've been able to do is ping a computer on the local net; I can't ping google or any of the software repos.  Any ideas?

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi. I just installed your latest image - emonSD-28-07-14.img -  in a B Pi and found an issue - the resolv.conf doesn't update so dns lookups don't work. Because of that, NTP fails and emoncms doesn't update the database.

I had to su as root, amend resolv.conf as it looks like it has your settings in it and put my dns in it and all sprang into life.

Just thought you should know.

Oh, and thanks for taking the time to do the image - saved me a lot of time and frustration no doubt!

Cheers,

Dicky

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi,all, I'm a bit long in the tooth for all this as its 50 years or there abouts since I did any programing and that in BASIC so simple answers please.

I'm trying to install a system based on new pi B+. Found out after many hours that the preloaded SD card bought at the same time from the shop with it wont work with the B+. So wiped SD card (SD Formater using overwrite) and downloaded latest image emonSD 28_07-14. Wrote image with win32 disc imager. At least the pi now starts up and if I plug it into a monitor I can now see text rolling by. I have no usb keyboard.

The emonTX looks to be loging data when I look with a USB to UART and copy into a text editor using rs232 data logger The light on the RFM12pi now flashes every 10 secs so I think its receiving something.

I log into emoncms and created an account.

Switched the pi on and waited, nothing. Should the pi be posting there automatically or do I have to set something else up?

I tried to see if I could work locally but having copied the pi's address from my router into putty and tried any combination of user (pi), (user). (admin) etc it wont let me enter anything at the password prompt, Any thoughts?? I'm on windows 7 starter for info.

Any help appreciated

Bill

Issue "Starting redis-server: failed" is now solved: don't launch "sudo service redis-server start"

Installation is now on going ...

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi  all

update on woes. Wiped everything and restarted, internet search suggests that Pi is voltage sensitive so removed USB extension lead and fitted new Ethernet cable. Success now able to log into Pi and used Putty to modify hub configuration but still no data received at my  Emoncms account. Used Putty to look at emonhub Log with the output below after which putty locks up. I got the same result regardless of  having  the Emontx  switched on or off-

2014-08-18 07:28:32,077 INFO Opening hub...
2014-08-18 07:28:35,111 WARNING 1 Discard RX frame 'information' : ['>', '4b']

2014-08-18 07:28:35,924 WARNING 5 Discard RX frame 'information' : ['>', '15i']

Any ideas ?

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi Bill

I'm not sure why putty would lock up but that short piece of emonhub.log suggests emonhub has successfully created the "RFM2Pi" interfacer because of the 3 responses.

Can you change the logging level to " loglevel = debug  " in emonhub.conf?  it looks it's currently set to the default of "warning" , that should give us more insight as to what is happening. It may be better to restart emonhub after changing loglevel to see the set up stages logged.

sudo service emonhub restart

Where are you editing emonhub.conf?

Paul

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Actually another observation, As there are no error messages highlighting issues creating a reporter, (assuming packets are reaching emonhub, but not emoncms) that could suggest the api key is missing from emonhub.conf.

I'm guessing your configurations are not being seen by emonhub. if you are using the latest 13/08/14 image, emonhub.conf was moved to /boot/emonhub.conf.

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi Paul, Thanks for the pointer. I had downloaded the 13/08/14 image having wiped the card  and editing through my router but managed to edit the emonhub.config file in the previous location. Is it normal for the green light next to the ethernet connection to be blinking constantly whilst the pi B+ is connected to Emoncms.org? That aside I am up and running to Emoncms.org when I get another card I will try the local variant.

Thanks again

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Dear Bill,

having the same failure, did you finally manage to bring the B+ to work?

Regards Walter

pb66's picture

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Hi Walter,

The issue Bill had was due to emonhub not seeing the correct settings as they were being edited in the wrong location. On the "13/08/14 image" the location is /boot/emonhub.conf where as the default location is /etc/emonhub/emonhub.conf.

Easy check to see if you have the right one is to set "loglevel = debug" in the conf and check the log to see if it has changed using

tail -f /var/log/emonhub/emonhub.log

There shouldn't be any issues running on a B+, let us know if you are still having an issue after checking the conf and log. (post a bit of the log maybe)

Re: Anyone got a new Raspberri Pi B+ working?

Thanks for your help, Paul. Yes finally I managed the B+ too using the latest image.

My problem now is to use an "old" RFM12B (v1) with attiny84 to work with it. It seems I am running the wrong TinySensor_RF12_Demo.ino.

Sorry for answering late.

Walter
